August 4th- "Tom Lake" by Ann Patchett tells the story of Lara, a mother living on a Michigan cherry farm with her husband Joe and three daughters during the COVID-19 pandemic. The daughters, having returned to the farm for the cherry harvest, coax Lara to share her past. She recounts her story of young love and ambition as a summer stock actress in Michigan at a place called Tom Lake, where she met and fell in love with the then-unknown actor, Peter Duke. The novel alternates between the family's present-day work and Lara's episodic storytelling, revealing the hidden chapters of her life and exploring themes of family, love, ambition, and the choices that shape a life.
September 8th- "Horse" by Geraldine Brooks about the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, whose life and legacy connect three timelines: the enslaved groom who cared for him in the 1850s, a New York art world in the post-Civil War era, and a present-day Smithsonian scientist reconstructing his skeleton. The narrative intertwines themes of art, science, obsession, spirit, and the enduring legacy of racism and injustice in America through the shared interest in the famous horse.
